TC 498
Winter 2005
Professor Kolko

TC 498 Special Topics: Digital Games
Wednesdays 1:30-4:20

This course is designed for upper division undergraduates and graduate students
who are interested in digital games from a variety of disciplines and with a
range of interests. The course will be divided into four areas. (1) Social and
cultural elements of games (role of the entertainment industry, games as
informal learning tools, gender and race issues in games and game design, etc),
(2) Games as instigators for technical innovation (interface design, graphics,
animation, multimedia integration, new input devices such as haptics, immersive
technologies, etc.), (3) Games in the global market (challenges of localization
for games, international legal standards, etc.), and (4) Emerging technology and
games (cell phone games, cross-market games like Beast or the Halo 2 promotion,
etc.)

The course will include readings, hands-on activities, usability testing, and
the opportunity for students to pursue topics of their own interest. Class
meeting time will be split between a regular classroom and a computer classroom.
Instruction will include presentations by guest speakers from local game
companies. In addition to regular class time and class assignments, students
will be expected to spend time outside of class familiarizing themselves with
some of the games that will be covered in the course. Course materials to be
purchased will include books, reading packet, and selected games.

For more information, contact Professor Kolko at bkolko@u.washington.edu.
