On War

Dulce et Decorum Est

An awesome anti-war poem, if you'd like to get more into it and have the time to read a longish essay on it, it's a good essay.
And to be fair here is a pro-war poem, a short one, but the best that I could find.
The Players

We challenged Death. He threw with weighted dice.
We laughed and paid the forfeit, glad to pay--
Being recompensed beyond our sacrifice
With that nor Death nor Time can take away.

Diane and I just got back from The Brechemin Scholarship Winners' Concert. (article) It was crazy. There were nine performances, they were all pretty interesting, even the weird wind chime and guitar thing. There was this one guy Michael Byerly who played the clarinet and he mentioned in his bio that he participated "in the Honors Croquet League, a highly distinguished sporting organization." Then there was the Brechemin Trio, a violin, cello, and piano and it was crazy violent! I liked it the best. The two guys which played the violin and cello, they had the funkiest artsy grimace and at times they were practically jumping out of their chair with how hard they played and I swear, I was worried a few times that they would just throw down their instrument and beat each other up. It was hilarious, exhilarating and very strange. Before that, I spent about 15 minutes volunteering to help make sandwiches for homeless teens. My job was to slather mustard on bread, we had an assembly line thing going. I miss Dan a lot, but yay! It's the weekend which means I get to talk to him :)

Instead of going to InterVarsity Large Group I went instead to Campus Crusade's Weekly Meeting. Why? It's hard to say, it was just like all of a sudden I felt like I needed a change, a change of scenery, of people (not that IV people aren't great :)), a different style, different ways of approaching God... And it was different, less charismatic (i.e. no jumping up and down and/or raising hands during worship) but their focus on evangelism and missions was definitely very refreshing and interesting. And I saw a bunch of people I knew there, from Jubilee and I saw Josh there again. But there were of course many similarities as well. They were no less focused on God than IV people are, and in no way does their style of worship take away from the real reason they do it, to praise God. :) The next place I want to go check out is The Inn, which might happen this month, but probably not. Next weekend is Easter. Last year's Easter was great, the youth group at my church were in charge of analyzing the last words of Jesus and presenting it to everyone at a special Easter meeting and it was just really great to meditate on something that is so much a part of the foundation of the Christian faith. And of course, the Easter before that was even better because that was when I got baptized and we did the awesome "Jesus Doesn't Care" (lyrics) Music Video/live singing performance in front of the congregation. I'd upload the music vid somewhere so you could DL it, but it's like 148 MB. If you don't have superfast DL, it'd take a long time.

Fantastically productive today...so far. I skimmed over the section that was briefly lectured on this morning in math, then I spent a solid hour before Chem quiz section cramming in chpt 14. I feel like I get the gist of it now, I thought there was a quiz and there was, but it was one of the ungraded ones. Then I got some food and ate in my room while reading the physics section that was lectured on and Michelle came and we chatted for a bit. Then after Physics, I dropped of the rest of my application for the NASA Summer internship and then I walked with Yeqin up the AVE a bit then we split and I went to make a copy of my Math 125 Integral stuff for Nick and then I went to the U Bookstore and returned the Physics study guide and then on the way back here I stopped at a Husky store and bought a zip-up sweatshirt. I bought one because I liked the one that Dan lent me so much that I think it would be good for me to have a gray zip up of my own. I would probably still have Dan's except that I gave it back to him because he wanted to wear it and smell it because since I've had it for a few weeks, it smells like me, cute huh :). Then the finally, I got to pet a stray kitty that was sleeping on someone's car. I made sure not to startle it, I said something like, hey kitty, before slightly reaching out to let it smell me, which it didn't bother to do so I just started petting it. :) It enjoyed it quite a bit because I could hear it purring. Nothing like a cute cat or dog to make you feel all peaceful and happy, :) my cute Dan works too.
And finally, some lyrics that are kind of bittersweet.

"Work It Harder Make It Better

Do It Faster Makes Us Stronger

More Than Ever Hour After

Hour Work Is Never Over"

--Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk

A great song.

Super quick blog, I don't blog in the afternoons because I have that thing called skool. Which is not an exception today, seeing as I have my Bioengineering seminar in 15 minutes. Anyway, an interesting thing happened today at lunch. I was sitting in the HUB, eating lasagna and I got about 1/2 of the way through it and then I sat back and started thinking about what I should do with the rest of the hour, and just letting my food digest. Also, I was pretty tired, sitting through math and then a lab lecture wasn't all that great so I was tired. Anyway, so this guy from a couple tables down gets up to leave and I make eye contact with him and a while later, he's behind me and taps me on the shoulder and when I turn around he says, "Life's going to get better, I promise." I'm so surprised that all I can do is give a weak laugh. For one thing, I had no idea that I looked so depressed. Secondly, it was kind of embarrassing, I hope no one else around me heard that. And finally, man! I can never just sit down and have a nice relaxing slack face time, nooo, I have to always have some kind of Mona Lisa smile on my face or else everyone INCLUDING COMPLETE STRANGERS think that I'm completely depressed. He was nice though to try to cheer me up, and it is true, life will always have it's valleys and mountains.

I'm just about done with doing Physics paper homework, and I was writing the word "orient" and I remembered a comment that a friend of mine, Rachel, made concerning Asians. She said that she used to call Asians "Oriental" before someone told her that it was offensive and she said that apparently, there were big protests staged about it with people holding signs that said:

We are not rugs!

The crazy thing is that this happened all here in WA and I apparently had no idea. Gov. Gary Locke signed into law a bill that prohibits the word "Oriental" from appearing on official documents just last year, which went into effect July 1, 2002. A short blip about it can be found on this page, it is the second to last topic, right before the still controversial topic of whether or not the nation should cut out two words from the Pledge. Another, more official blurb about it.

What are my views on the matter of using the word "Oriental"? It's not going to stop people who want to be derogatory to Asians, I don't think I know anyone who uses that term to describe Asians and definitely no one that uses it in a demeaning manner. Where do people get off on acting like little kids and calling each other names? Asians stereotype themselves more than anyone else does. How many times have you said "You know how it is, Asian Parents." It's just something to alienate outsiders and make Asians more clique-y. I certainly have made jokes about it (Asian Parents) a number of times and I constantly say things like "Go Rice!" or "Got Rice?" etc. It's one thing to celebrate your heritage and what makes you unique, but it's another thing to shove it down someone's throat and make it seem like we, as Asians, are superior. Sounds Nazi-like to me.

Background on the previous blog: It's raining lightly outside and occationally there is a gust of wind. I was walking through the Quad, which is home to about a dozen cherry trees that are in the late stages of blooming.

The poem is ee cumming-esque style and Blogger doesn't do it justice. Thus, here is a correctly formatted version of the poem in Word.

The cute purse that Dan bought me!

I volunteered yesterday at the Robotics competition for 3 hours, from about 9-12, then I ate lunch with everyone. As usual, one of the volunteers noticed that I was packing my knife and commented on it. :D My favorite thing to do after that is pull it out and be all like, huh? You mean this little thing? And then I breathe on it and clean it on my shoulder, heh heh, macho huh? But really, it's a nice sleek beautiful silver knife and if I do say so myself, it looks nice in my back pocket. The funny thing is that it seems like the older people are, and especially older men, they don't flinch at all when I mention that I got the knife from Dan which of course, I always refer to as my fiance. LOL, kind of disappointing if you ask me, I enjoy those double takes and then getting a chance to talk about him and get that stupid funny grin plastered over my face. Doing math homework really doesn't take as much time as I think, it's just that I take so many breaks inbetween doing it...like now...:) but anyway, I did laundry yesterday and I also got to talk to Dan :), which, besides the time I spend e-mailing him, is the only interaction that I have with him these days. School is bad because it gets in the way of me getting to spend time with him. The last two nights Diane and I have stayed up late to watch a movie. On Friday night, the movie was on Diane's computer and it was "Two Weeks Notice", last night it was "America's Sweethearts" and it was on my computer. Both were alright chick flicks.
